Psalm #2, Evening Prayer: Bump in Night

Beneath the blowing fan,

beneath the wind,

beneath the silence you befriend.

Beyond the rumbling train,

beyond the screech of breaks,

beyond the engines, be afraid.

Beneath your skin,

beneath the end,

beneath the darkness you befriend.

Beyond the welcome rain,

beyond the stranger’s scream,

beyond the others, be afraid.

The rattle of the refrigerator grate,

the hissing in the radiator case,

these are your embrace.

The numbers on the digital display,

the flicker of curtains in window-frames,

these are your embrace.

The taste of sleep,

the damp and grainy sheets,

blessed be that we are weak.
