In 2007, Smith Magazine serialized a comics treatment of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. That work, “A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge,” tracked the lives of seven New Orleans residents as they fled, remained and struggled to survive and recover not just their things but their lives. Its creator, Josh Neufeld, is best known for his collaborations with Harvey Pekar, whose scripts, highly detailed and paneled, come to life in the renderings of illustrators casually assigned. …

David Ulin is evidently a big fan as well. Enjoyed meeting Kim Deitch and exchanging emails with him for this piece in Los Angeles Times:
Graphic novels should be better. They should be so much better that serious readers bristle at the genre designation, which is too narrow and diminutive. Few artists have exceeded the limitations of either the market or the dual skill sets required by the form. Terrific writers who know how to work with artists, terrific artists who know how to work with writers: These abound. Perhaps like the art of the moving picture, “picto-fiction” (to cite a term introduced by Entertainment Comics in the 1950s) really is a collaborative art. …
